Spreadsheet Modeling for the Classroom: The Value of Position on the Web Page

ABSTRACT

This article focuses on the authors' experience with a little-used quality of spreadsheets–the ability to construct spatial models. The article follows the development of a Web page layout model for classroom use. The model presents students with the problem of balancing out value of position, color, movement and other input factors in developing overall Web page strategy.     

把合作化教学模式引进中职英语课堂

目前中职学校英语教学普遍存在着教学沉闷、教学效率低等现象,为了改变这些现状,笔者尝试把合作学习教学法运用到中职英语的课堂中,通过实践发现,采用合作学习模式教学,不但激发学生的学习兴趣,提高学生运用英语的能力,而且还培养了学生与他人合作的能力,更重要的是这种互相切磋的过程中,学生找到了自信,学生的综合素质明显提高,从而达到了理想的教学效果。     

Effects of ownership change on organizational settings and strategies in a Taiwanese hotel chain

The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of ownership change on a local-chain hotel in Taiwan: how the new chief executive officer (CEO) planned a blue ocean strategy and how he led all employees to achieve pre-established goals. This study applied qualitative research methodology whereby the data were collected by participant observations in the study field and subsequent in-depth interviews with an application of the QSR NVivo software program. This study implies that, in the assimilation stage of the change, (1) the CEO should use democracy instead of dictatorship; (2) sub-cultures, factions and conflict could be prevented by organizational socialization and equal opportunity treatment; and (3) blue ocean strategies enable a shift of organizational image and identity. This qualitative study supplements the existing literature by showing that organizational politics might be affected by organizational change and how the concept of blue ocean strategy might be implemented in the course of organizational change.     

Economic Education in Japan at the University Level

The author describes from personal experience and observation economic education in Japan at the university level. As is true almost universally, Japanese students pursue higher education with different motives and aspirations and have a variety of institutions from which to choose. What they obtain in return depends upon the faculty with which they study and their own perseverance.     

Textbook Treatments of the Financial Market in the IS-LM Model

Intermediate macroeconomics textbooks introduce financial markets into the IS-LM analysis but typically as a beginning-of-period consideration. Here the financial market is introduced in an end-of-period model.

A Classroom Tariff-Setting Game

The author outlines a classroom tariff-setting game that allows students to explore the consequences of import tariffs imposed by large countries (countries able to influence world prices). Groups of students represent countries, which are organized into trading pairs. Each group's objective is to maximize welfare by choosing an appropriate ad valorem tariff that may be changed intermittently throughout the game. The game is built on a computable general-equilibrium model, which allows each nation's utility and terms of trade under alternative tariff regimes to be expressed quantitatively. The exercise encourages students to consider terms-of-trade improvements and efficiency losses resulting from large-country tariffs and provides a framework to discuss the Nash equilibrium of a tariff war. The game is a useful supplement to traditional teaching methods.

Your Place in Space: Classroom Experiment on Spatial Location Theory

The authors detail an urban economics experiment that is easily run in the classroom. The experiment has a flexible design that allows the instructor to explore how congestion, zoning, public transportation, and taxation levels determine the bid–rent function. Heterogeneous agents in the experiment compete for land use using a simple auction mechanism. Using the data that is collected, a bid–rent function is derived, and the experimental treatment is altered over the course of three sessions to uncover core concepts in urban economics. Moreover, this provides a tangible experience that can be used to help undergraduates relate to urban issues such as the steep rent gradient found around many larger colleges and universities.
